Event description
The first edition of the Department of Art in the City 2020 is a performative residency. During this residency a choreographer, Iza Szostag, playwright Tomasz Węgorzewski and visual artists Sara Piotrowska and Maciej Szczęśniak will attempt to improvize using other artists’ works, their notes and sketches. They will treat those materials not as byproducts of creation process, but as documents of important cognitive processes. Through trying to convert content of those materials into movement and scenography, the residents will make them and their authors come to life in an unconventional way.
The Department of Art in the City is a cyclical event allowing teachers and students of the Pedagogical University a chance to place their work in the context of problems important to contemporary culture and Cracow itself. The 2020 edition is dedicated to artistic and design projects which can be assigned a cognitive character and a peculiar openness – rather than being a result of a complex creative process they are ‘nodes’ for those processes. To accentuate this openness, the event will be divided into multiple parts, or ‘nodes’. During KRAKERS the audience will be able to experience Node 1.
Gallery description
Elementarz dla mieszkańców miast is a gallery, a club and a meeting place placed in a building at Asnyka 7. It takes up the basement – where most of the musical events happen, and the attic which is an unconventional (and sometimes very demanding) space to present contemporary art. The patron of Elementarz is the writer Bertolt Brecht, from whose series of poetry Aus dem Lesebuch für Städtebewohner the name of the initiative was borrowed. Currently three people take care of it: Leona Jacewska, Martyna Nowicka and Arkadiusz Półtorak.
