GALLERY INFO
The place on 15 Czysta Street in Cracow was leased in 2018 by Bogusław Bachorczyk to create an art studio. In the past, there were stables for horses here, a carpenter’s shop, a lady with a hen lived here, there was an antiquities warehouse, a photo studio and a copy shop. The yard was not very popular with temporary tenants or residents of a neighboring tenement house. It was decaying for many years. When Bachorczyk moved his studio here, he took care of the small garden and refreshed the space around it. He refreshed the gutters, painted the door and sowed new plants from the seeds that he had brought from his travels: to the Beskid Mountains, Ustka, Berlin, Kassel, and Umer (Kielce). The idea to introduce art to the garden came to be in 2018, when we’ve invited a few artists, mostly from Cracow, to cooperate. They were asked to present their work to the garden and to the host. The artists personally made and installed the works which had infected the area discreetly, growing on the ground, doors, walls, and trees. Despite not always being made from lasting materials, they will stay in this place forever, decaying with time, as it is embedded in their nature. The project, which was not supported by any external subsidy and was the need for a non-capitalist exchange of emotions, ties between artists and those between artists, the host and the place. This joint work led to a reversal of the hostile atmosphere of the yard and allowed both artists and residents to enjoy the beauty of the new space on Czysta Street. The garden serves as an intimate, non-institutional place for meetings and further artistic exploration. The project is still ongoing and new artists are joining it. In 2019 and 2023 it received a scholarship from the City of Cracow.
